Fashion Revolutionaries Unite at IGC's Fashion Cypher Networking Event 2024 in Uganda

On June 1st, Kampala was alive with the energy of creativity and sustainability as the IGC hosted its latest Fashion Cypher Networking event. Supported by the British Council Uganda, Yujo Izakaya, and Fashion Revolution, this quarterly gathering brought together independent sustainable artisans, fashion designers, artists, and other creatives for an evening of mutual support, improvisation, and collaboration.

The event featured a dazzling sustainable fashion and goods pop-up market, showcasing the talents of local makers committed to eco-friendly and ethical practices. But it was more than just a marketplace – it was a multifaceted artistic experience, with live painting, art installations, a raffle, poetry readings, DJ sets, and live music performances.

"We also had some workshops on screen printing, sewing, and garment design," explained one of the organizers in an interview with RCFS Media. "Emphasizing ethics and sustainability, the event celebrated 'slow' fashion and art. Moreover, we explored the interconnectivity of different art forms and their collective significance in defining Ugandan cultural identity and heritage."

This Fashion Cypher Networking event was the most successful of the three held so far, setting new records for both participation and attendance. With a staggering number of applications from eager creatives vying for a spot, the event featured the broadest scope, largest number, and highest caliber of artists yet. This winning combination ensured a highly entertaining and thought-provoking program, drawing a crowd of over 250 engaged attendees.

Throughout the evening, the air was electric with networking interactions, as creatives connected, exchanged ideas, and forged new collaborations. Numerous attendees praised the event, highlighting the necessity and importance of such gatherings for the well-being of Uganda's creative economy.

Highlights included a stirring poetry session by Mitch, a captivating performance by emerging RnB talent Tai Dai, and a mesmerizing live painting demonstration by Munze. Attendees also had the chance to win big raffle prizes and peruse the IGC Fashion stall, which showcased the collective's signature modern interpretations of ancient African fashion and history, crafted from a blend of indigenous and recycled materials.

More than just a networking event, the Fashion Cypher was an opportunity to discover local emerging artists committed to a brighter future for culture, climate, and society. As one attendee remarked, "It was incredible to be surrounded by so much talent and passion, all focused on creating a more sustainable and culturally rich future for Uganda."

The IGC Fashion is a creative conglomerate behind the Fashion Cypher and is dedicated to preserving and enhancing environmental, cultural, and societal well-being. While best known for its fashion label, which creates modern interpretations of ancient African fashion and history using a combination of indigenous and recycled materials, IGC's mission extends far beyond clothing.

The collective coordinates a wide range of events, workshops, and campaigns focused on sustainability, economic equality, and cultural heritage preservation. The 4Real Fashion Festival is an event that celebrates and promotes the African fashion, creativity, and cultural heritage of Africa through a series of engaging activities, including fashion shows, Art exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops, poetry, comedy, Red carpet experience, entertainment, and cultural performances. By bringing together established designers, emerging talents, industry professionals, models, and fashion enthusiasts, we aim to create an inclusive and immersive experience that highlights the global influence of African fashion. The 4real Fashion Festival 2023 event was held in Nairobi the capital of the Republic of Kenya at the Bomas of Kenya received several endorsements from established Kenya government ministries, departments, and agencies with the hosting rights for 4FF 2023 which welcomed participants from different countries in Africa such as Somali, Ethiopia. DRC Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Nigeria, and the 2024 edition will be done in Juba on 6th July 2024 in which all African countries will be participating.

This is one of the examples of her work that Nuhamin presented in Nairobi. Nuhamin, who explained that she wanted to create a cultural connection, included the angels of Mali, which are said to be more than 1000 years old, in her works in black. "This is because the contrasting colors stand out well on the white dress," Nuhamin explains why she decided on only the two colors. In ancient times, the Malays used mud collected from river banks and stored for a long time to make angels with different interpretations in their handicrafts.

Rwandan LGBTQ Fashion Designer Plans Comeback After Arrest: Inside Moshions

Less than a decade after founding Moshions, a fashion brand whose customers included Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, LGBTQ designer Moise Turahirwa's career came to a crashing halt following their arrest a year ago. Turahirwa was charged after sharing a post on Instagram claiming that their passport was changed to reflect their gender.

Now out on bail, the 33-year-old told AFP they were shocked by the speed with which their life unravelled, but insisted they would "rise from the ashes" by focusing on the concept of gender fluidity that first drew them to fashion. Raised in a village along Rwanda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Turahirwa started making dresses for their sisters' dolls as a young boy.

But encouragement was in scarce supply. "I remember a lot of rejection as a child. My mother... didn't want me to play with dolls," Turahirwa said, pointing to ingrained traditional attitudes to gender roles. It was only after Turahirwa moved to the capital Kigali to pursue a degree in civil engineering that their passion for fashion found full expression. Surrounded by like-minded creatives, Turahirwa scraped together their first collection that showcased many of the elements that would become hallmarks of the Moshions label.

Entirely sewn by hand, the 2015 collection was self-consciously modern, with no African prints to be seen amid the sheer white tank tops, bronze leather shorts, and peplum blouses worn by the models. It was an instant hit on Rwanda's nascent fashion scene but sales were slow, with Turahirwa working as an engineer to make ends meet during Moshion's early years.

The brand received a major boost during the 2017 presidential election when Turahirwa produced jackets and T-shirts screen-printed with images of Rwanda's iron-fisted ruler Kagame. Government partnerships followed with Kagame himself spotted in a Moshions shirt. The brand also held shows in Europe, as Turahirwa pursued a master's degree in design in Florence and saw their creations worn by celebrities including Ivorian football icon Didier Drogba, Spanish actress Rossy de Palma and Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa.

By the start of 2023, Turahirwa was employing around three dozen people based out of a large studio in Kigali, with annual turnover amounting to 500,000 euros ($533,000), they said.

'A lot of toxicity'

At first glance, the jewel-toned silk dresses and embellished grey sweatshirts appear to have little connection with traditional Rwandan design. A closer look however reveals the influence of Rwanda's imigongo art, whether on printed dresses or the black and white beadwork adorning sleeves.

Turahirwa's most consistent inspiration though is the Umushanana, the traditional draped scarf worn by Rwandan men and women, whose gender-fluid identity reflects the designer's own beliefs about fashion's role in society. "Fashion... gives you the right to be whoever you want to be," they said. But it still has limitations, as Turahirwa found out last year when they shared the post about the gender change on their passport.

They were charged with passport forgery and drug abuse, spending two months in custody after lab tests showed they had consumed cannabis. The forgery charges were dropped while the drug abuse case is ongoing. The arrest in April last year followed an outcry three months earlier over a leaked video allegedly showing them having sex with two men.

Although homosexuality is not banned in Rwanda, discrimination is rife, and social attitudes towards LGBTQ issues reflect "a lot of toxicity", Turahirwa said.

"I think they wanted to make an example of me for the youth, that they should be extra careful with their freedom."

'Start over'

Despite their legal woes, Turahirwa said they remained a steadfast backer of Rwanda's government, with Moshions producing a fresh batch of T-shirts to support Kagame's re-election campaign this year. Gender-neutral design inspired by Rwanda's traditional draped clothing is at the forefront of their push to "start over", they said. Since the arrest, their ambitions have shifted, with Turahirwa looking to make Moshions a more niche brand with a smaller consumer base.

"I don't feel comfortable out in public because I feel like people have a lot of negativity about me." They found safe haven in the embrace of family members, who were the only people to visit Turahirwa in prison. However, the designer has never shared their sexuality or their non-binary identity with their parents. "We don't speak about it," Turahirwa said. "There's nothing for me to say."

Cultural Style Week has officially made its mark in Sheffield South Yorkshire with a spectacular launch event and fashion show hosted by Meadowhall Centre on Friday 24 May.

Cultural Style Week is a dynamic movement created to celebrate the beauty of culture through fashion. It’s that one week in a year. The organizers invite people from all backgrounds to proudly embrace and ‘wear their heritage'. From May 21 to 27 each year, individuals worldwide are encouraged to participate by donning their cultural attire and sharing their vibrant expressions online using the hashtag #CulturalStyleWeek. Wear traditional attire from your specific ethnic group or country. This could include colorful printed fabrics, elaborate headdresses, beaded jewelry, etc.

IGC FASHION (Ibrahim and Godfrey’s community fashion) was founded in 2017 by two Uganda fashion designers Kasoma Ibrahim & Katende Godfrey. The brand is a fashion and costume label from Kampala in the heart of Uganda inspired by African heritage, nature, and culture always paired with a forward thinking and a unique design aesthetic. Meet African Fashion Designers Showcased at the SoCreative Summit 2024, In Johannesburg

The SoCreative Summit, initiated by the British Council is dedicated to supporting creatives and social entrepreneurs. This year's theme"EMERGENCE" explores various aspects of creative growth and identity across Africa, from new work and ideas to technology and cultural narratives.

According to the summit is a platform for Knowledge sharing " Summits allow for the exchange of ideas, best practices, and learnings across creatives and entrepreneurs from different African countries. This cross-pollination can spark new collaborations and projects. Large gatherings enable attendees to build connections with peers from other nations, which could lead to future partnerships, investments, or joint ventures" says event organizers

Fashion designers from the Creative DNA Africa program were selected to showcase during this continental event from Zimbabwe. Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Chido's leadership ensures that every stitch is carefully placed, emphasizing the brand's dedication to eco-conscious practices. Combining hessian with locally sourced leather creates durable and biodegradable accessories, including their Zero-Waste Range, which utilizes remnants from production.

Godfrey's fashion brand, IGC Fashion is a Ugandan streetwear label inspired by African tradition, heritage, and culture, paired with a forward-thinking and unique design aesthetic. We look at a garment as a moving, breathing piece of sculptural art that can be used as a vehicle for communicating and questioning ideas about our culture; we use natural and indigenous materials such as Nsimbi (cowrie shells), Lubugo (barkcloth), second-hand garments as fabric combined with experimental shapes and patterns to make clothing. IGC Fashion uses fashion as a tool for positive social change.

Sandra Suubi was born in 1990, in Kampala, Uganda. She is a socially conscious visual activist, whose multimedia physical and sonic sculptural works are a response to her observation/ study/ experience of popular visual culture and social practices, especially in her country Uganda. From her early sculptures, constructed from an assorted range of found objects – used plastic, tyres, metal, discarded boats, etc ¬- to the most recent wearable performance installations ( Samba Gown, 2022, Kiragala 2021) made of 2nd hand clothes, plastic pipes, used jeans, used cables, and such, Suubi broaches issues thatdeal as much with industrialization, single-use plastic, climate change, commodity, and exploitation, as with the transformative effects of the accumulation of mass-produced goods, material culture and women’s lived experiences.
