Fashion is not Singular as an Industry: Inside Asantii from the Land of 1000 Hills
Fashion is often perceived as a monolithic industry, but in reality, it's a multifaceted ecosystem that intertwines with various sectors and cultural elements. Asantii, a contemporary womenswear brand based in Rwanda, exemplifies this complex nature of fashion, showcasing how a single brand can embody artistic expression, cultural heritage, economic development, and global connectivity.

Rwanda is a rapidly growing developing country, with average GDP growth of over 7% per annum since 2010, backed by a strong policy framework. However, despite this, the country’s industrial sector remains small, with most firms facing competitiveness issues due to several supply-side constraints, exasperated by the country’s small size and geographic location. 98% of Rwandan firms are SMEs, with limited access to finance, raw materials, and skills.
Among the growing sectors is the fashion sector with its slogan #MadeInRwanda. There are many entrepreneurs including young people who continue to invest in the fashion business. However, with limited access to finance, raw materials, and skills then to sustainably running their businesses is still not easy, instead, it becomes a challenge for start-up businesses.

Before our journalist wrote this story read “Fashion is not Singular as an Industry” a paper published on LinkedIn by the Asantii which is sustainable by default and is dedicated to making change in the fashion industry through a meaningful commitment to consciously sourcing materials from across Africa, and ethically producing its collections at their state-of-the-art factories in Rwanda.
In Rwanda, according to the numbers, there are more than 50 established fashion designers and there are about 100 or more new and upcoming fashion designers. Of the total of 150 designers about 30 % of them are professionals who went to school to study fashion design and textile skills. Then 70% are self tough or talented and probably got sewing talents from family members or short courses in tailoring. The Made in Rwanda policy initiated by the Rwanda government which was created between 2015 and 2017 is aligned with Rwanda’s aspiration to become an upper middle-income country by 2035 and higher income by 2050.

Even though there is no single fashion school in the country, the fashion sector continues to grow and the Asantii is a sign and an example of how the future fashion looks like in Rwanda. The brand was founded in 2020, according to their paper‘s perspective it is clear a lot has been done inside the brand's factory and the brand is proud to share why fashion is not singular as an industry.

"Now my focus, in addition to running Vivo, is to help other entrepreneurs, and especially women entrepreneurs, develop their own businesses. We are still struggling in so many ways, but unless people hear or see someone trying, it's very difficult for them to imagine what's possible."

One designer expressed skepticism, saying, "Our community doesn't understand the upcoming fashion designer and even the government doesn't support the upcoming designers. It will take us a lot of energy to be able to sell in that store USA, I don't even think it will be possible."

"I haven't met with Wandia Gichuru before, just following her on her Instagram page. I really like her work there is no doubt that Vivo Fashion USA will benefit all of us," she said, expressing hope that her products would soon find their way to the US store.

According to a Kenyan fashion expert, there are some other challenges such as limited access to resources and capital, difficulties in scaling production to meet international demand, and navigating complex international trade regulations and logistics. However, Vivo's success also points to potential solutions and opportunities.
“ Then we can see the increased collaboration between established and upcoming designers and a greater focus on educating the public about the value of local fashion, this includes the advocacy for more supportive government policies as well as leveraging technology and e-commerce to reach global markets,” Fashion expert says

Among other names showcased in the AFAA2024 Nairobi edition included; ANIEZ Unique Designs, Emerald, Twitch Stitches, Taj Luxury Collection, House of Zahra, Billions, Jane's Fashion, KB Fashion, Just Luxury, Rieldo and the Kenyan Raw An incredible designer with a collection that reveals his creativity in recycled fashion.
The event organizer Kingsley Amako who is the CEO and the founder of the AFAA emphasized that the primary aim was to help these designers showcase their creations and generate sales. To bring the collections to life, approximately 30 models were hired to present the various designs on the runway.

One Kenyan model expressed satisfaction with the event, stating, "The event was good, I can say, and models were very happy because they did their part and we were all paid." This model also sent an encouraging message to aspiring models, urging them to "keep chasing that dream."

But next time they will need to do advertisement earlier to help fashion people know event's details ahead of time."

A fashion enthusiast commented on the difficulties posed by holding the event in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD): "Scheduling an event downtown in Nairobi [CBD], you have to be very careful with the traffic. Some people were willing to attend the event, but thinking of parking and reaching the hotel during rush hour, some decided not to attend."

Their lighting was good, and their collections were very unique and very inspiring." The success was attributed in part to support from the Centre Culturel Francophone du Rwanda (the Institut Français in Rwanda), which provided crucial logistical assistance"

Some attendees noted that audience numbers were lower than expected, and there was a noticeable absence of established local designers among the crowd. One observer remarked, "I was there, the show was ok, but the number of the audience was easy to see and countable. I did not see other fashion designers besides their team members. These other established fashion designers with big names didn't attend their event. It was so sad."
The organizers of the Novelty Fashion Experience have taken these observations to heart, using them as valuable lessons to shape an even more impressive event for 2024. A Kigali-based fashion show organizer commented, "They learned a lesson, and you can see this year's edition they want to involve other fashion designers to make it bigger."

As the world embraces the richness and diversity of African fashion, it is imperative for the Rwandan fashion community to find ways to preserve and promote its cultural heritage while adapting to the ever-changing landscape of the global fashion industry. Whether through reinventing CollectiveRw or exploring new avenues for collaboration, the future of Rwandan fashion lies in the ability to unite and showcase the country's unique blend of tradition and modernity.

What will be the difference? The Stage Fashion Showcase 2024.
On 16 June 2024, all streets heading to Mundi Center in the heart of the Kigali City, the Capital City of Rwanda were full of models heading to a heavy model casting call by The Stage Fashion Showcase under the SSANDUINA Ltd. More than 300 models were presented according to the organizers.

Big names in the modeling industry in Rwanda were also there and among the guests included Kabano Franco Co-founder of Webest Models Management, Rwanda’s leading modeling agency to help models gain jobs and contracts locally and internationally. Other names who attended the casting call were model Sekamana Luis, model Maboneza Gilbert, Mr. Mutabazi from the Rwanda Models Union, and many others including the casting Judge team members.

Talking with Flash TV after the casting call Mucyo Sandrine CEO and founder of SSANDUINA Ltd said that about 900 hundred models were applied
“I am happy but I am not really happy, as you can see we have many models showing up today. For online applications, we received 900 applicants. The total number of those who are here today is 321 models. My plan was to select 50 models like last year, but I have decided to select 63 models including the legend names because I have no choice “

Even though there were many models who showed up for the casting call some models were scared to attend the casting call added Mucyo” They are so many models who really wanted to come for the casting and they even already registered, but they were scared to show up and some were feeling nervous, we go their text messages”

A model who talked to the RCFS’S MEDIA said that the modeling casting was confusing and that is why he didn’t show up” Their first poster I saw on Instagram, the STAGE was charging some money for the registration, and then later they announced that it is free to register with a deadline date. For me, I was confused about their communication”

Another model who talked with our journalist said “ Mucyo cannot control her emotions in front of all those old models and “so-called legend models”. Is she looking for old models or new faces? I don’t know. What I know is that few new faces are on that selected list”

Mucyo Sandrine is a former model who is trying her best to help and support young and upcoming models to showcase their talents. Before the casting call was announced, former model Mucyo initiated some meetings with different modeling agencies owners in Kigali to talk about her plans and what models will benefit from the Stage Fashion Showcase 2024 edition.
“The founder of the Stage Fashion Showcase was joined by The leaders of Rwanda Fashion Models Union and all agency leaders based in Kigali for an insightful meeting that discussed a number of topics in regard to how we can collaborate to effectively develop Rwanda’s ModelingSector. The meeting also was done in regard to setting the requirements and standards of the models to attend the Casting organized with the intention of selecting the best 100 models who’ll be in Rwanda by then to join training sessions, fun activities, and performing on the biggest fashion stage in Rwanda that is set to take place on October 5, 2024” Press release after the meeting Mucyo Sandrine had with modeling agencies in Rwanda

During the interview on the casting set, the journalist asked Mucyo to share more about the activities of this year's event and replied “ I can not share our activities now but soon you will know. We will let you know, you know this is going to go all the way to the month of October, starting with storytelling and other activities with selected models”

The first edition of Stage 2023, was a success according to fashion lovers and fashion enthusiasts even though the organizers were not happy with the results. Talking with the media after the event Mucyo said "This is a big disappointment from the Marriot Hotel Kigali side. We agreed that we would showcase all of our collections including the Bikini wears, but closer to the event they said someone from the government said that no Bikini in our runway show. This is not fair”

The first edition of the Stage Fashion Showcase took place on October 14 at the Marriott Hotel Kigali. According to the Mucyo, this year's edition will take place at the Convention Center, Rwanda’s leading magnificent 5 stars hotel and conference venue

Different local media wrote that the Stage Fashion Showcase 2024 models' casting call was in high preparation from the branding to the rules for models to follow with casting. However, some event organizers think Mucyo needs sponsors to keep her project running.

“Mucyo is doing a great job because she is providing a platform for models and those are Rwandan youth who are creating job opportunities. Yes, the branding was good and we saw the same thing with Job Bunyeshuli and others. She needs sponsors to keep that project running. We don’t need to see her quite like some past fashion promoters we all know.

The Stage Fashion Showcase is a hub for models that is not only geared towards booking talent on a national level but also towards planning a fashion show with the goal of discovering, promoting, and growing Africa's models and fashion designers on a worldwide level.

Moshions: Turahirwa Moses' Journey from Jail to Paris Runway
Moshions, the renowned Rwandan fashion house founded by Moses Turahirwa in 2015, has garnered attention for its latest collection, INFARANSA. However, the brand's success has been met with mixed reactions, particularly due to Turahirwa's recent past.

After a stint in jail, Turahirwa, the creative force behind Moshions, has been on a journey to revive his brand's former glory. The INFARANSA collection, recently showcased at the prestigious Theatre Chaillot in Paris, was intended to be a triumphant return to the fashion world. However, some fashion enthusiasts have expressed concerns about the collection's perceived lack of creativity and the designer's apparent stress-induced state.

One fashion enthusiast from Kigali, who spoke to RCFS's MEDIA, remarked, "When I see the photos of his recent collection INFARANSA, I remember his recent story from the jail. To be honest, I think he looks stressed in his creations nowadays." This sentiment echoes the concerns of some that Turahirwa's recent experiences may have impacted his creative process.

Another fashion enthusiast from Kigali shared a similar view, stating, "I don't think people are interested in his collections nowadays. I also think creativity is not as it was before he was jailed." These comments highlight the challenges Turahirwa faces in regaining the trust and admiration of his audience.
