40 RWANDAN FASHION DESIGNERS TO VISIT IN KIGALI - THEIR #INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS

Since 2013, many Rwandan entrepreneurs started to invest in fashion and modeling businesses. As of 2015, more than 10 fashion houses were already established and known. More than 4 fashion events were also happening each year around Kigali, the capital city. These include Kigali Fashion Week, Rwanda Cultural Fashion Show, CollectiveRw, Rwanda Modestsy, and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Kigali which was established in 2019.

 It is in this year of 2015 when the Government of Rwanda under the Ministry of Trade and Industry established the "Made in Rwanda’ initiative". It aimed to help boost economic growth and industry, promoting locally-made products at a global level.  According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Made in Rwanda policy was created as a contribution to job creation, economic development, and improved livelihoods.

 Even though the journey of Made in Rwanda had been seen as a channel to change the fashion scene. Local fashion designers had been facing some challenges such as getting raw materials early and being able to capture the clothing market. The Rwanda Fashion Industry has been through different ups and downs because of the Covid-19 pandemic but it kept developing because fashion is part of Rwandan culture and who Rwandans are.

It was a long way to go, and many thanks to the fashion agencies in collaboration with public institutions who made it possible and put more effort to fashion fun and memories. Through various events like Kwita Izina Ceremony and Visit Rwanda, we have seen different superstars purchasing products from local designers that make the Rwandan flag stand in Western countries. Currently, fashion designers are in the battle to compete with second-hand clothes from Europe and China that had been in the clothing market in Rwanda for over 80 years ago.
